Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease. The most common cause of hypoalbuminemia in SLE is the lupus nephritis, yet protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a rare cause. PLE is characterized by the loss of protein substances into the gastrointestinal tract, and it results in hypoalbuminemia and anasarca. Most of the reported cases of PLE associated with SLE were in young females, but this is a rare condition in adult males. We report here on a case of protein-losing enteropathy associated with systemic lupus erythematosus in an adult male.(Korean J Med 71:S1120-S1124, 2006)
